just wait

"Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord." Psalm 27:14

"Just wait."

Many times this is easier said than done.  Wouldn't you agree?  How many times have you said this to a student, only to see them roll their eyes and stomp off in frustration?

There are times in our life we don't know what to do, where to go, how to act, what to say, how to feel. Our heart cries out for answers and solutions now. Yet, His Word reminds us that being still and waiting for God is the right response.

While waiting is not easy nor what we want, trusting Him during the stillness is a must.  What we don't know is overcome by what we do know.  God will answer, calm, strengthen and guide us as He deems best in His perfect timing.

Father, fill my soul with songs of praise for You while i wait.  Thank You.

in for the long haul

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28

The walk is a little slower, the smiles not quite as wide, the arrival time a bit later.  School is back in full swing and some of the normal patterns and old habits are beginning to appear. Are you ready for whatever is in store for you this year?

The joy of the journey ahead depends a lot on us... our attitudes, our actions and our reactions.  We can influence for a better or eternal future in another, but it takes work, patience, love and a belief we can conquer the battles ahead.  Or i should say, a belief that God will provide opportunities for victories as we obediently allow Him to work in our lives.

His calling in our life is for good... through our trust in Him, His glory will shine as a witness to others.

trust your senses

"Contribute to the needs of the others and seek to show hospitality." Romans 12:13

There was no need to ask the class what they had been doing before their library time  It wasn't so much their activity level when entering the room, sweaty wet clothes or the glistening balls of sweat on their faces, as it was the smell of the sweltering heat oozing from their bodies and now swirling in the library.  Recess had definitely marred the group, and now we needed to work closely with them in a planned activity.

Sometimes we know or can determine the whys of  a tough  situation before us and sometimes we are clueless. Sometimes it takes a reading between the lines and just doing what needs to be done. Whatever the case, may we approach it with care and kindness.

Father, when we are faced with unusual or unpleasant circumstances, help us respond in love. When we serve others, may we remember our response can make a difference in their day... and perhaps even their life.

the survey says...

"Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people..." Galatians 6:10

The smiles on students' faces confirmed what class surveys revealed.

Much to the delight of teachers and parents, it was a terrific new school year start.  Thankfully teachers are aware tears, fears and doubts might score high in the beginning.  With much thought, preparation, proved strategies and prayers they are equipped to handle meltdowns and queasy stomachs.  Kudos to all school personnel who so eagerly and successfully contribute to maneuvering through possible choppy waters.

While many at schools plan well for the first days, new beginnings in other situations may not occur as smoothly. Whether it's a new job, a living relocation, or a new group you are joining for other reasons, first outings can be unsettling.

I'm praying to continuously possess a mindfulness of people in need... whether strangers or friends. May the Teacher's success formula of doing good and helping others whenever we have the opportunity always rule in our heart.

thirsty?

"I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint." Jeremiah 31:25

With the scorching heat lately, the hydrangea basket on my porch requires daily watering.  It's amazing how they can appear practically dead one minute, then shortly after a cool watering be fully revived.

I kind of feel like a withered basket case myself right now.  The start of school and other matters have left me depleted, drained, draggy and dry.  In the heat of life, i've developed a serious daily need for a drenching of Living Water.
I'm thankful for Friday and the opportunity for a  continuous, quiet soaking at His feet for restoration and renewal.

Are you feeling thirsty too?   Let's stop, refresh and quench our thirsty soul this weekend with Him.

He sees all

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28

Changes in life can trigger many responses.  Whether it's a change in personnel, policy, plans, priorities or place, disruptions in our routine might be difficult.  It can instigate a raging ocean of emotions... from excitement, joy, relief to hurt, fear, grief, guilt, disappointment, uncertainty, anger, panic, shock, confusion, numbness.

How do we properly channel change?  Through God.

In everything, including changes for the better or worse, God is still in control. We never need to worry about Him blinking and missing anything in our life. He sees all and will take care of matters in His perfect way and time.  How He plans to work through and with the changes in our life calls for our complete trust in Him.

The God that holds this world together, holds each of us individually too.
He's got us.

fragile days

"The Lord heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds... Great is our Lord and mighty in power; His understanding has no limit." Psalm 147:3,5

Cracks in fine china and crystal i expect, but in my hardy ceramic coffee mug? No.  Yet, there is was with no explanation.  A hot, muggy day and a cracked mug added up to a drained afternoon... inside, as well as, outside.

While shopping with my Daddy one Christmas, he picked out a mug for me. My precious gift from him is now cracked, and i feel broken on tough days without him.

I am bluntly reminded, no matter how strong our faith, there are times when the hardy-faithful's heart shatters through pain like a fragile-novice's heart.  While believers are sometimes considered strong enough to handle their struggles, God realizes the truth.  Our frail humanity is never more exposed than when we face piercing tragedy or are grieving.  After a heartache, when family/friends return to their routines and all is now consider well, one can and does find blessing and comfort in God alone.  God scoops us up and continues to bind up our wounds... His understanding has no limit... He doesn't question or criticize our recovery time or process. He understands.

Forgive me, Father, when i expect others to respond with the thorough understanding only You possess.  I am thankful for those who have already traveled the harsh roads of pain, as they have a special ability to provide an extra dose of comfort and understanding.  But most of all, i am thankful how You cover, repair and strengthen all the ugly cracks that show up in our life.  You, Father, can restore beauty even out of the worse of times.

God knows... and that is enough.

Classroom rules

"I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you." Psalm 32:8

As a teacher, what do you expect from your class?

1.  Pay attention; listen when the teacher is talking.
2.  Be prepared; read your lessons and do your homework daily.
3.  Apply what you learn to your work.
4.  Follow the teacher's directions.
5.  If you need help, ask the teacher.

Would you agree those expectations are building blocks for the success of the student? To help them get the most out of their studies? And, to reap benefits now and in the future?
We, also, are students under the watchful, loving eyes of the greatest Teacher of all... our Father.  In the classroom-of-life for Christ, the same guidelines will assist us too.  He has the desire and ability to equip us with wisdom, discernment and power.  May we listen to Him, read His Word, do as He instructs, and pray... in times of need and praise.

leader of the pack

"Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock." 1 Peter 5:2-3

When we lead by example and with a servant's heart, the flock feels properly empowered and secure.  Hold on the dreams that ignited your fire to teach and inspire others to discover their dreams.

It's going to be a rewarding year.

best part of summer

"Your love has given me great joy and encouragement..." Philemon 1:7

When asked about the best part of their summer, student responses varied:

sleeping late
visiting relatives
swimming
camping out
visiting theme parks
going to camp
traveling
playing with friends
having sleepovers
taking a family vacation

But there was one response I didn’t expect. One student told me he was just excited to be back at school. When I asked him how long he had been ready for school to start, he answered cheerfully with a big smile, “all summer!” Wow.

For some students, the best part of summer was coming back and seeing you.  No doubt, you rank very high, if not on top, for the best summer attractions. Just look at those smiles around you.

new beginnings

"Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! " Isaiah 43:18-19

If last year was filled with hardships and struggles, God has Good News to share.  What lies ahead is a new year, new opportunities, new friends, new material, new start, new growth.

It's time for putting the past behind and moving forward with a renewing of mind, soul and spirit. Praying for Him to lead us into this new year with His Wisdom, Peace, Strength, Joy and Truth.

all A's!

Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord..." Acts 3:19

There is nothing much better than the first days of school. Everyone gets to start with a clean slate... no strikes, no demerits, no detention, no zeros. From grades to behavior, everyone has all A's. No wonder the halls are full of smiles and good cheer! It's a wonderful opportunity and start for all, no matter the past.

When we ask for forgiveness and approach the throne of grace, we have that same wonderful opportunity. Our Father wipes away all the failures, shortcomings and sins in our lives and remembers them no more. We are then able to serve Him in A+ style. In need of a new start and refreshment in your life? There is no better day than today... the "A" is yours merely for the asking!

you a teacher?

"We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach..." Romans 12:6-7

What you do is God's gift to you.  What you do with that gift is your gift to God.

Teaching.. it's a gift from God. And the best gift you can give back to God is not a  pretty Pinterest-perfect room, but a tender, in-touch-with heart allowing Him to branch out through you in love and goodness, touching all students in your path.

Gifts from God are the best, and you are the best teacher for your class.  Accept His gift with joy, believe Him and let Him shine through your words and actions.  You are going to be a rich blessing to those students claiming you as theirs.

'twas the night before school...

"I will give you as a light to the nations, which my salvation may reach to the end of the earth." Isaiah 49:6

‘Twas the night before school and all thru the town,
Children were filled with delight and couldn’t settle down.
Their book bags by the door were packed with care,
Knowing a new school year was almost there.

The children were giggling and tossing in bed,
While visions of super teachers danced in their heads.
Now, across the way, teachers were finally at rest,
They had busily prepared for "day one" - to their very best.

Then out came the sun, shining so bright.
The teachers feared they'd overslept the night!
With a deep breath they grabbed their glasses and peered at the clock,
Alas! there was plenty of time before the school doors were unlocked.

Arriving early for a final check of the room before the bell at a quarter to 8,
The teachers breathed easily for their classrooms looked great.
The books and supplies were stacked neatly on shiny, clean desks,
The chairs were in perfect order… there was absolutely no mess.

Soon the bell rang, and one-by-one the children eagerly came;
What sweet music to their ears as the teacher called them by name.
Hello Ben, Hi there Emma, Louise and Jada,
Welcome to our class Anna, Tommy and MaKayla!

Come on in Craig, Rashaad and you too, Donna Sue!
Oh, my! Look at my list, what a wonderful crew!
Now find your seats quickly, the teacher said with a grin,
And she explained classroom instructions so everyone could win.

Her knowledge was vast and she made learning a ball,
What the teacher had to offer was her gift for all.
The children drooled over the information she shared;
Whether they learned quickly or not, they knew she truly cared.

The teacher lovingly taught all because she truly believed,
Each child deserved her best…and she wanted to meet their needs.
At the end of the day, students and teachers skipped away,
Both feeling happy and relieved it had been such a great day.

And I heard the students exclaim as they rode out of sight,
My teacher is great!! this year is going to be just right!

Yes, my friends, you teachers have the power,
To serve the Lord, our Father and Teacher, each and every hour.
So to Him give your best in all that you do,
And you will make a difference in others, perhaps for an eternity too!

Shine my sisters and brothers, light up your classroom and world!
It's the beginning of a fabulous school year!  And it all starts with wonderful you!

May we trust God to provide the strength, wisdom, courage and protection needed for each day.

puttin' on the shine

"...let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:16

It almost required sunshades...

On
my first day back at school, i was immediately WOWed by the beautiful floors. While i enjoyed my summer break , our custodial team buffed, polished and worked tirelessly putting our building in spit 'n shine shape. Their effort and dedication clearly glowed in every corner of our building.
Father, as we prepare for the return of students next week, i pray they find Your Light shining through us. Brush off my weaknesses, erase my impatience, remove stubborn stains of criticism and doubt. Then polish me with kindness and understanding, fill me with JOY and seal my heart with Your desires while i shine with Your endless love. It's a new year, and time to put on the shine and "Son"shades.

flip flops on hold

"Pour out your heart like water before the face of the Lord... Lift up your hands toward Him for the lives of your children." Lamentations 2:19

Where did summer go? One blink of the eye, a couple of flips in the water and a new school season is here. My bookbag from the end of the school never got put in the closet, and now it's time to use it. Where do we start?

Whether a teacher, administrator, parent, grandparent, relative, friend or other supporter of education, i've got a winning solution. Start with what is needed first and most of all... prayer. Let's cover our schools and students in prayer starting today. With God all things are possible.
